The Lady and the Little Girl in the picture are wandering "why are these crazy people staring at us and smiling?"
Big Thanks for posting this Gail. That trip remains fresh in my memory. Especially that crazy Irish Kid who kept hanging his dirty laundry on his bike every time we stopped. In Italy some old woman went up to him and asked "how much for the underpants?" Lets do it again some time. ...............Back to The Alps 2009 or 2010? |

I want to go back to Italy the most. I want to ride and eat my way through Italy for a couple of week.
Please don't make me stop in Germany for any meals. (sorry Fred). |

Aah, Gail. Thanks for the memories with your posting! Seems like yesterday when that photo was taken. We all smiled for that photo but we all grinned like
fools all day long on that truly blissful riding day, didn't we??
For me, German food is real comfort food, as that is what I grew up on. I recently heard someone refer to German sausages, wursts and other related cold cuts as "Tube meats". The old style german butchers
elevated the transformation of a pig into a variety of finished products to a true art form, cholesterol implications notwithstanding. I understand where you
are coming from, Gail, as I do encounter "consumer resistance" from Rose when I say that I want to cook a a favorite of mine at home,
Schlachtplatte, which is sauerkraut with blood sausage, onion liverwurst and short ribs cooked in with it.

Local Comfort Food: | #5 | ||

Yo Fred!
No need to venture all the way to Europe for comfort food. There's a Great, New authentic German restaurant on Millbury St. here in Worcester called Nick's. Beautiful decor and real German beer on tap. Home made, warm ginger bread with whipped cream for desert. Any time you and Rose want to venture this way gimme' a call. We'll join you. For those of us on that trip-----do you remember the first stop we made in a major downpour after getting of the Autobahn? We stopped by a raging river at a
little sandwich shop where we were fed a sandwich made with some sort of wurst meat. Just bread and meat. That was good comfort food!

Boy, was that stream cooking! Even the locals were taking pictures of that torrent. What most of you ate in that butcher shop that morning was
Leberkäse
on a roll, kind of a bologne baked in a loaf pan that tastes best when hot. I like it accompanied with glazed onions. They ran out of it by the time I
finally had my turn, and I had fleischküchle,
a kind of a meatloaf hamburger, instead. Everyone appeared quite happy with their snack.

My favorite stop was the last hotel in Austria: Edelweiss Gurgl...after a cold day riding.... multiple saunas and steam room....a nice indoor-outdoor heated
pool.....
http://www.edelweiss-gurgl.com/ I want to go back there at some point in my life for a propper ski vacation... I just thought that place was so cool...
Good times on that trip...
Wolfgang and the Three Amigos...
Phil drinking his sorrows away...
Pascal gettin ready to do some laundry....
Dinner after steam baths, saunas and the pool...... what a place.....
From earlier in the trip...day two?? I think... Stelvio pass
What a beautiful part of the world....looking north east down Stelvio pass |

We must have had a good time.
We are still talking about it two and a half years later. And Yes Maurice,i remember the sandwich,as i stood there thinking "my boots are waterproof" that is they are full of water and its not leaking out. We will not ever know what was in the sandwich, but i do remember the barber shop next door. The sign said " Heinen Sweeny Todden". Many Thanks to Victor and Moe for doing what you did. |

What is winter for if not reminiscing? Even if it is a few years later.
I remember the meat stop...I remember thinking there where goldfish swimming between my toes and that I really missed the big fairing on my bike! Does any one have pictures of the landslide that has us trapped in that village the first day out. I seem to recall there was some posing going on! |
