You got to go there and read it: Rob is getting the bike repaired as we type this. His message this morning:
Good morning, Nothing like the sleep of the dead to bring one back to life. Last night about two hours into rem sleep I had a dream. Some guy named Rob along with his buddy Joe came to my hotel. Rob has a FJ cruiser and a low trailer. That's strange, my name is Rob and I have an FJ cruiser and a low trailer. Then Rob tells me he used to have a super duty and a box trailer but he dumped it all for the FJ. That's strange I used to have a super duty and a box trailer that I dumped for the FJ and Kendon. So Rob and his buddy Joe and coming by this morning and we are going to load the RT on his trailer and take it down to the dealer. Then we eat. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to something other than granola and life savers for breakfast.
The piece of paper with their phone numbers convinced me I wasn't dreaming.
I didn't think of the need for a six hundred service on the new drive, this may influence my decision to go for Hyder. If this failure occured 12 hours later I would still be there waiting for the worlds most expensive tow. If I get stuck in or on the way to Hyder it could cost me far more than finishing the rally. For initial service Max has the drive oil changed on all bikes at the 600 service than they don't touch them again. The last service on the bike was the 12k at 11,8xx miles. The bike currently has something like 18k. I can't thank you all enough for your props and support. I am generally pretty good at self-motivation but right now it is pretty hard to get excited to go out and flog myself some more. The virtual pat on the bum is something I just can't attach a value to. It is priceless and I thank you all very much. As always more to follow. Can't keep a Sled Dog down!! |

What is up with these freak'n BMW final drives..........!! This is really hurting BMW sales. There are three members right here in our own club that opted
out of BMWs because of the final drive issues............You just can't trust them on a long tour..........Or is it all in our heads?
Has anyone ever heard of a final drive letting go on a Concourse, Moto Guzzi, GW, etc with only 18K miles on it? I'm sorry, it just pisses me off knowing how much time and effort Rob put into himself and that bike for this event......And it was all going so well. And to have the FD let go, which we all are aware of it's issues, is just so disheartening................ BTW, great thread over on the ADV site ..................

All my years riding and being involved with the Concours Owners Group I never heard of a final drive issue.

Well, I bought a Guzzi thinking I was escaping the final drive issue, even if problems are a remote possibility. My Breva goes in on Sept 4th for its'
replacement final drive due to leakage. No failure, but leaking from both input seal, and the top seal for the reaction arm. All bikes are vulnerable to
failure. Make your choice and take your chances.

Well that sucks. When the final drive on my 1200 went this spring the dealer had to wait 3 days for replacement to come in from NJ. Hopefully Rob can find
one quicker. Very suspicious that a factory bulletin came out advising dealers to drain and inspect the lifetime sealed drive unit at 600mi., then seal them up
for a lifetime again. Equally suspicious that the failed drive had to be packaged in a plain brown paper box and shipped to NJ for "inspection".

Parts like this are sent back to the factory so the engineers can find you the cause of failures. Obviously BMW designed the drive to not fail. When it does
go south, they need to find out what the problem is by examining as many failed drives as possible.

Sorry to see a mechanical failure like this happening, especially after all the effort expended in prepping this bike for this event. MAJOR BUMMER. If
feasible and reasonable, I hope Rob jumps back on to continue.
I know that failed rear drives were very rampant in the early years of the K1200LT. i had no idea that this was also true of the new "see through" rear ends. Bob, you're right that the manufacturer has to get to the reason(s) for part failure so as to make the appropriate corrections. My beef with BMW is that they share very little of this information with others/owners unless the Federal government (NHTSA) mandates a recall. |

Rob's bike was repaired and he was back on the road the next morning. BMW has some major bad publicity to deal with on this on. |

8/29/07 From the Rally board: Rob Nye called in today to report that his first bonus after the repair of his failed final drive was Custer's Last Stand.
This rally has given Rob an appreciation for how Custer must have felt at the bitter end.

The majority of the drive failures on Custer's horses was due to lack of maintainence/operator error.
Because of the unsavory method of checking the horse's fluids most riders did not, therefore not knowing when they were not properly lubricated. |
