Posts: 393 05/06/08 9:01 PM	Tags : None I've been looking into getting a sidecar rig that I can use for gigs and get proficient at it so I can take my daughter for rides in a few years. I found a 76 R90 w/ 30,000 miles with a Jawa side car. Asking is $4,500 and I know it's been listed for a few weeks. I don't know anything about this combo or pieces seperatley . I could aslways take off the sidecar and eventually mount it on the R69S but I'd rather keep it a solo twisty burner.I'm trying to keep the bucks under $3,500 if I can do it. Thoughts? Thanks, Andy

Posts: 47 05/07/08 12:15 PM	I'm certainly no sidecar expert, but i did a great deal of research on the subject last year before buying my wife's '74 R90/6 - Jawa rig. Here are a couple of thoughts... Driving a sidecar rig is VERY different than riding two wheels. I personally think that the more miles you have on a solo bike, the more difficult it is to learn to drive a hack. Sidecar rigs, (other than the real high-end ones) are quite often put together by a "backyard mechanic", although there are a number of qualified people who can do it. I would find out as much info about the rig as possible before you undertake buying it. Not only about the bike, but about the sub-frame installation as well as an other modifications that were done to make the bike a better tug. Again, weigh this info with the amount that you paid for it, as i don't claim to be an expert. scott

Posts: 36 05/07/08 6:41 PM	Andy..I've been driving various BMW side car rigs for over 25 years. You get what you pay for. Taking your daughter or any family member for rides in a side car driven by an inexperienced driver is asking for some serious trouble. There are many books written by David Hough regarding side car operation that should be read prior to undertaking the operation of a rig. Rigs wear out tires three times quicker than a solo bike, rigs wear the drive components out of a machine at least twice as fast as a solo bike, gas mileage is cut in almost half. Driving a rig is a full time job: not like a solo ride. I have owned a velorex 562 in the past and found it an rather nice hack. $3,500 spent will probably get you in real trouble: good safe rigs are expensive and need constant maintenance and adjustement. I do realize that a sidecar rig is a totally different beast and that's why I wanted to get one and drive it till I was very proficient with it before taking anyone for a ride, I have a trailer to pick it up and good parking lots to take it to. I'm not in a rush to get it (years if need be), but i have been searching to see what's out there. The rig I saw in Craigs list was set up by Heidi's Hodaka whom I trust, they rebuilt the engine in my R69S. I'm going to call them and see if they remember this rig, the current owner gave me the name of the owner who had is set up by them, the asking price is $4,500 and they said they bought it to give their granddaughter rides but then she moved away. Owner has a couple vintage Harley's. Andy
